So, the status quo remains.
The Prime Minister has spoken, assuring us that he still have the support needed to remain in that position.
It’s useless to keep on talking about the Prime Minister’s position, for now.
However, what we can say for sure is – the issue will continue to be discussed, does not matter whether you’re a supporter or in the opposition.
Even when a strong government was in power, there has always been speculation about everything a Prime Minister did or did not do, should or should not do.
What more when a Prime Minister has to announce about his position after meeting His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
His supporter will defend him, the other side will find reasons to attack him.
Two reasons stand out – the withdrawal of support from eight members of Parliament and when the Prime Minister mentions the ‘court cluster.’
This is a strong evidence that the Prime Minister will continue to be shadowed by issues of how much support he has as to be deserving to continue in that position.
As for the court cluster, people know who he is referring to but does it means that he fears this groups’ influence in the near future?
What actually a help to him, at least in the short term, is the country is behind efforts to stop the Covid-19 pandemic as no other issue is strong enough to force people to be more strident in their opposition to the current government.
Next stop is September when a new Parliament sitting is expected to decide on the position of the Prime Minister.
Bottom line – this continuous politicking about the Prime Minister is not good for the country when lives and livelihoods are at stake.
