KAKI BEDAL: Hold Elections Soon Or In 2023?

By Kaki Bedal

“If I’m the advisor to the Prime Minister, I will advise him to hold elections in two year’s time.

“Why the hurry about holding the 15th general elections (GE15) soon?

“Let others bark away as loudly as they want.

“Things are being tackled now in terms of dealing with current challenges ,” says a friend recently.

Yeah, that made sense.

The political situation in the country is still fluid.

Add to that the problem of Covid-19, elections is the furthest thing in people’s mind.

Since the present PM still has two years left before the next round of elections, he can wait until after the nation achieves herd immunity before making any steps towards GE15.

Remember also the small matter of economic recovery. Any disruptions to the aid packages the current administration has announced, will only set back the recovery we want.

Recovery means the business sector is up and running pre-Covid, inter state travel and travelling overseas resume, employment figures start getting better and tourism back to normal.

Most importantly, people are no longer restricted to move about albeit with new normal rules and regulations in ensuring the pandemic risks can be dealt with.

It is, admittedly, going to be tough for the Prime Minister as he knows only too well that politics will, as usual, disregard the part about putting the nation first.

The only thing that is not a new normal is politics.

The ‘gossip cluster’ has been saying that there’s a possibility of GE15 this year as politicians jostle for attention and positions in light of that.

Some, nevertheless, will remind the Prime Minister that he  has assured us that he will not hesitate to hold GE15 after the success of overcoming Covid-19.

It would be much more wise for the PM or any leader of the country, to take his time about it.

Ensure the nation really recovers and the people has no more worries about their future. Better to be safe than sorry.

Two years is not a long time. People surely feel the impact of Barisan Nasional’s loss in the 14th general elections since 2018.

When Pakatan Harapan took over, 22 months of mind boggling and haphazard decision making has seen the country losing in every sense of nation building.

It reached a nadir when Tun Dr Mahathir resigned and with it the PH government followed by the Sheraton Move that installed the current government.

After three years of shaky governance due in no small way to the pandemic plus politics, two years is surely not that long to wait for the next elections.
