A total of 10,109 or 2.7 per cent of the 373,974 candidates who sat for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2022 examination obtained straight As.
A total of 403,637 candidates sat for the SPM 2022 written exam from February 20 to March 15, involving 3,355 examination centres nationwide.
Education director-general Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali said a total of 75,322 candidates or 20.1 per cent obtained average results with at least a grade C for all subjects.
He said that 128,193 or 34.3 per cent candidates passed, while 126,793 candidates or 33.9 per cent failed at least one subject.
In addition, he said, the National Average Grade Performance (GPN) of SPM 2022 showed an increase to 4.74 compared to 4.86 for SPM 2021.
He said this year a better National Average Grade (GPN) score of 4.74 was recorded compared to 4.86 last year.
Pkharuddin further explained that a lower GPN value indicated a better candidate’s achievement, but the ministry did not make comparisons as each candidate had his or her own strengths.
“The GPN for Sekolah Menengah Agama Rakyat has shown an increase from 6.10 in 2021 to 5.71 in 2022.
“This is the first time that a religious secondary school gets a national average grade below 6.0 while the state religious secondary school recorded a GPN of 4.60 in 2022 compared to 4.80 in the previous year,” he said.
In the meantime, he said, the number of candidates eligible to get a certificate increased to 91.6 per cent compared to 88.1 per cent in 2021.
Pkharuddin said the candidates were more prepared with the Standard Secondary School Curriculum (KSSM) introduced by the Education Ministry.
“Performance for the core subjects, namely Bahasa Malaysia, English, Islamic Education, History, Mathematics and Science also showed improvement.
“History as a core subject recorded an improved performance,” he said.
Beginning with the SPM 2021 examination, all subjects tested are based on the KSSM that was introduced in 2017.
Through the new format, the ministry also included the results of students’ oral skills achievement through Speaking and Listening Tests for Malay Language and English Language subjects.Pkharuddin said the achievement of urban and rural SPM 2022 candidates showed an improvement with the achievement gap narrowing, which was 0.03 points compared to the previous year. – NST ONLINE
