KAKI BEDAL: A New Normal Process To Be Selected Prime Minister

By Kaki Bedal

It is well known that whoever leads a party or a political bloc in this country to win a general election, he will be the Prime Minister.

That’s the main and maybe only condition for a person to be Prime Minister, a given as witnessed after every general election in this country since independence.

The question maybe many in political circles might be thinking about currently is – who will take up the torch after Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin?

All or most might point out to the usual suspects but this writer would like to propose for a different person altogether.

Meaning, pick a new face. The usual suspects can play an advisory role. People are tired of old style politics.

When former political friends turn political foes team up recently to ask Parliament members to reject 2021 Budget, that is what this writer is referring to.

A new political culture needs to be establish if this country wants to go forward into the future.

Generally, experience helps. But, does it?

All levels of society are urging politicians to prioritize the rakyats’ welfare, the Yang Di-pertuan Agong included.

But, what happened was a political manoeuvring allowing the thinnest of margin of approval for the budget.

Surely, an insult to the people in this country.

To a certain degree, it is probably true that those opposing Muhyiddin had a re-think about the question of who can replace the Prime Minister and subsequently what’s next for the country.

If the main political parties leadership is wise,  they will know that a new leadership front or candidate is needed for the voters to choose the best person to be the next Prime Minister.

With one caveat. Do not select someone too young for the position as witnessed previously when a young minister talks a lot but accomplish zilch.

With more than one third of voters are however made up of the young, the candidate should be someone who they know have achieved something and done a lot in the service to society.

This fits too the new normal era. For a new normal in politics and new normal in choosing a Prime Minister.

For example, why can’t the number two or three of a party be the Prime Minister of Malaysia?
